Today is the birthday of the Web. A NeXT machine at the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva was hosting what is now known as the first Web server http://info.cern.ch and on this particular day the code for accessing that server (later on known as a browser) was posted in an alt.hypertext discussion group.
From the BBC News:
In a few short years the web has become so familiar that it is hard to think of life without it.
We are taking the opportunity and give credit to that exact publication date by back-posting our standard Web server errors to August 6, 1991.
