Kevin Kelly at the 2007 EG Conference. "That cornucopia of stuff. It's amazing. And we're not amazed!"
Satellite images of the whole earth. All patents. Anyone's phone number. Everything for sale. Government forms. Weather anywhere. All your friends. Instant sports scores. For sale ads. Real estate prices. Local library books. Street maps. Everything on auction. All movies. All regulations ...
- The talk: "The World Wide Web, as we know it, is only 5,000 days old. Now, Kelly asks, how can we predict what's coming in the next 5,000 days?"
- The speaker: "Kevin Kelly has been publisher of the Whole Earth Review, exec editor at WIRED, founder of visionary nonprofits, and writer on biology and business and 'cool tools.' He's admired for his new perspectives on technology and its relevance to history, biology and religion."
We have constructed a single global machine with zero downtime. A huge machine. Nevertheless, as of 2008, that huge machine has the processing power of one human brain only.
But wait. Given the actual growth rate, that machine - the Web - will exceed the processing power of 6b humans in 2040! Sounds like a Stanislaw Lem novel? Indeed.
