"What is Google Voice anyhow?"
Google voice is simply unifying all your incoming voice communication into one number - existing or provided by Google - and hopefully keeping it a lifetime irrespective of your actual provider or (in the future) your actual location/ country of residence/ country of occupation.
Apart from the pure voice unification services, Google begins to offer other-than-voice format convergence services as
- Saving and archiving voicemails in a way we are used to save and archive emails, or
- Automatically transcribing voicemails to text in order to handle them as SMS or email.
It remains to be seen how Google will try to internationalize the service and how to further integrate it with IM (Google Talk), social networks and recommendation systems (Orkut, Google Reader and Google Buzz), as well as with Snow White Google Wave.
